Scotland and Me

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Ever since I have been transferred to the Birth Injury Claim department, I have come across so many different sad cases that I am thinking that I might be clinically depressed. Along with all the remedies in offer for a depressed person, one is to go for a vacation. I chose remedy vacation. The destination this time was Scotland. I guess everyone wants to go to Scotland at least once in their lives; this is a place that is not only beautiful, but is renownedly beautiful.

Edinburghs most exhilarating months

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Edinburgh is truly a fabulous city that once experienced is rarely forgotten. It’s a beautiful and romantic place with a fascinating history, filled with stunning architecture, restaurants, hotels, shops and museums. It’s a jewel in Scotland’s crown, and there is no better time to visit it than in late December or anytime during the month of August. Although a visit at any time of year is well worth it, those two times of year are when the city is at its most vibrant and alive to visitors.

Hogmanay runs from the 30th December to the 1st of January and is probably the biggest NYE celebration in Europe. People from all over the world gather in the centre of Edinburgh to enjoy open air and candlelit concerts, torchlit processions through the streets, an outdoor ceilidh and street parties. The evening culminates with a firework display in the skies above the castle that is second only to that over the Sydney Opera House on the other side of the world.

But remember to book early if you fancy celebrating Hogmanay Edinburgh-style- it’s hugely popular and sells out in advance every year, no matter how cold the weather!

August is festival time: Edinburgh hosts a variety of world-famous festivals during the month. It’s own eponymous festival, the fringe and TV and film festivals fill the streets and venues with an explosion of culture.

Whilst the huge array to choose from may mean (simply by the law of averages!) you’ll spend an afternoon watching a one man play in a cellar about the differences between regular and red diesel, it’s worth it. For every 3 hour student production of Waiting for Godot in Czech (probably in a converted nunnery on the edge of town) there are gems to be found. New writing, physical theatre, cabaret, burlesque, family theatre, storytelling, comedy, art, ballet, contemporary dance, Shakespeare… There really is something for everyone and as you walk down the Royal Mile in August, surrounded by actors, musicians, street performers and posters, it would be impossible to forget how much choice you have.

One myth claims that if you keep a Scottish pound note in your purse after you’ve been to Scotland, you’ll always return. It’s worked every year so far!

Driving on Scotland’s roads

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Despite not being a large country, tourists travelling in Scotland will find that their journeys can take significantly longer than in many other countries in Europe. This is because of the country’s twisty roads and the mountainous terrain. The most difficult route is travelling from the east coast to the west, for example, from Aberdeen to Oban. The rugged Cambrian mountain range is particularly difficult to drive through, entailing pot-hole ridden roads and steep gradients. Luckily, the difficulty of such More

Scottish cuisine

Scotland is a country I am particularly fond of. Not because I am actually Scottish in any way – nor do I have any Scottish heritage – but because I adore the food.

Now, the Scots are not renowned for their cuisine. Generally speaking, they’re somewhat teased about it on the international food scene. Their eagerness to deep fry everything that moves (from the humble Mars Bar to the noble haggis) has resulted in an underwhelming impact on the world More
